Cemex SA, the world's third-largest cement producer, got a court order blocking a ship with 37,000 tons of Russian cement from entering a Mexican port, thwarting an investor group's plans to start importing cement, Reforma newspaper reported.
Federal Judge Gilberto Gonzalez said Monterrey, Mexico-based Cemex filed for an injunction to stop the ship from docking in Tampico, a port city on the Gulf of Mexico coast, and he suspended the ship's docking permit, Reforma said.
An unidentified Cemex executive said the company sought the injunction because the ship would have docked permanently as a loading for facility for additional shipments and ``put at risk the shipping channel of the port,'' Reforma quoted the company official as saying.
Rafael Meseguer, director of port operations at Tampico, said it's the first time that someone has tried to block a ship's arrival into Tampico port, Reforma said. ``We understand Cemex's position,'' Reforma quoted Meseguer as saying. ``It's valid. They're trying to avoid competition within their legal limits.''
Cemex spokesman Gerardo De la Torre said in an interview that company's aim is to ``ensure port security and navigation, not to stifle competition.''
