Lafarge 9-month sales up 5.7 pct
Lafarge, the world's largest cement producer, reported a 5.7 percent rise in 9-month sales on Thursday, thanks to higher cement prices in the United States and Europe, and reiterated its guidance for the full year.
Lafarge said it was confident full-year operating income would grow by more than 10 percent, excluding currency fluctuations and barring unusually adverse weather conditions.
The building materials company, which has operations in 75 countries, said in a statement it generated sales of 10.87 billion euros ($13.69 billion) from January to September, compared with 10.28 billion euros a year earlier.
This was at the top end of forecasts of four analysts surveyed by Reuters. They had expected sales to be in a range of 10.74 billion to 10.87 billion euros.
"We reiterate our confidence that the growth of our operating income on ordinary activities for 2004 should exceed 10 percent, excluding currency fluctuations and barring unusual weather conditions," Chief Executive Officer Bernard Kasriel said in the statement.
"This should be achieved against a continuing rise in energy costs and the strong performance of our business in the second half of last year," he added.
Third quarter sales were 4.08 billion euros, up 5.7 percent on a like-for-like basis, which factors out currency, divestment and acquisition effects.
Analysts welcomed the sales numbers as well as the company's reiteration of its guidance for the full year.
"The figures are in line with my expectations. The reiterated guidance should satisfy the market," Nabil Ahmed at Cheuvreux said.
Currency hits, mainly the euro's strength against the dollar, took a 3.7 percent bite out of 9-month sales.
Lafarge's cement unit showed a 7.8 percent rise in quarterly sales on the back of improved pricing in North America, most parts of Asia and Africa, and across Europe save for the United Kingdom where prices remained flat.
