Mexico's Cemex seen weighing European asset sales
MEXICO CITY, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Mexico's Cemex , the world's No. 3 cement maker, is seen selling some European assets once it completes the $5.8 billion acquisition of British ready-mix giant RMC Group.
Cemex's announcement it would sell two U.S. cement plants to Brazil's Votorantim Cimentos for $400 million could be the first in a chain of divestitures especially in countries where Cemex cannot make deep cost cuts, analysts said.
"Once Cemex has control of RMC....it is going to start to investigate operation by operation and it is possible that it finds some assets that do not make strategic sense... and could sell them," said BBVA-Bancomer analyst Carlos Perezalonso.
"I do not rule out that once it has RMC next year it could sell some European assets," Perezalonso said. "I don't see Cemex selling anything more in Latin America or in the United States."
But the sale to Votorantim of two plants in the Great Lakes region of the United States, also suggests that Cemex is not opposed to letting go of assets at the right price.
"Mature markets like Germany, where Cemex has no operations and scarce synergies with the rest of its operations could be divested in the future," Peyrelongue said. "Other large players in Germany might be able to extract more value to RMC's operations in Germany than Cemex."
"Quite definitely, it could be prepared to divest some other assets but they would be smaller," said Vector analyst Carlos Hermosillo.
